Today is my younger brother’s birthday (Happy birthday, Brian). QUITE a few years ago, when he was in school, he loved the song, “Life in a Northern Town” by The Dream Academy. In fact, he liked it so much, he recorder that song on an entire side of a 60 minute cassette tape.

Kids… a cassette tape was one of those weird things your mom and dad listened to before CDs and MP3s became all the rage. They were sort of like the “wave of the future” well, before CDs and MP3s. They are also responsible for the name “Walkman”. See, you’d have this device where you put a cassette into it, hit play and it acted just like an iPod – at least in the sense that it allowed you to walk and listen to your music where ever you went.

But I digress… anyway, he probably forgot all about that tape so for his birthday, I sent him a CD filled with various covers of “Life in a Northern Town” that I bought and downloaded from iTunes. The CD only contains versions of that song – there are no other songs on it except… “Life in a Northern Town”. There’s actually some really cool covers out there – including one by Rick Springfield (“Jessie’s Girl”) but one version that I actually was surprised that I liked so much was a live version performed by Sugarland, Little Big Town and Jake Owen (country music stars).

If you like “Life in a Northern Town”, I encourage you to check the live Sugarland version out for yourself. And, if you decide to buy it, please don’t make an entire CD (or tape cassette) out of it because years later, your brother might do something crazy and fill up your iPod with that song.

Happy birthday, bro!

Currently NOT listening to “Life in a Northern Town” by ANYBODY!
