Mac is a hold-over from the incomplete and unrealized “realistic” Capes ‘N’ Babes graphic novel that never came to be (but was the genesis of this strip). I wasn’t originally planning on bringing in any of the characters from my original graphic novel story but sometimes – as they teach you in creative writing classes – characters will occassionally write themselves into a story. And that’s sort of what happened with Mac.

Mac made his debut a few strips ago (although at the time, he remained unnamed) and he seemed the perfect character to play off of Marc’s cavalier attitude about comics. This is not to say Marc doesn’t appreciate the value of comics. He works in a comic book store, after all.

But he also realizes that, ultimately, comics are created to be a source of entertainment. It’s just a question of how some people appreciate that entertainment. Some are like Mac and derive pleasure from putting the comics in mylar bags and never reading them. While others want to enjoy them to their fullest. If that means occasionally dripping a little mayo or mustard on them, then so be it.
