For those of us in the United States, Memorial Day is an odd holiday in the sense that it is meant as a day of remembrance for all the people who have sacrificed their lives for our country – so it seems a tad bit inappropriate to wish people a “Happy Memorial Day”.

Because of that, I’ll simply say I hope everyone has a meaningful Memorial Day – whatever that might be.

My grandfather (on my mother’s side) was a Navy man and it always struck me with a great sense of irony seeing as he never learned how to swim and served on a boat. He didn’t talk much about his time in the Navy – except for that small little nugget. So for today, I plan on spend some time thinking about him and my grand mother whom both passed away a number of years ago.

But you know, Memorial Day doesn’t just have to be about war veterans. There’s nothing that says you can’t spend a little extra time remembering EVERY one in your life – whether they are still with us or not. So, maybe today, that’s what we all should do – whether you’re in the United States or not.

In the end, everyone should have their own Memorial Day.
