So… as you can clearly see, today is Tuesday yet there is a new strip up today.

Why?

Because of Memorial Day.

I decided that instead of putting up a humorous strip yesterday on memorial Day, I’d wait a day and put it up the day after. Besides, in all the years I have been doing this strip, usually, any time a holiday falls on the same day as a new strip, hardly any one pays attention to it – until the next day.

Besides, I was also spending most of the holiday trying to get prepared for Awesome Con in Washington DC this weekend. It starts June 3rd (Friday) at noon and runs until Sunday evening. Hope to see you all there!

As for memorial Day itself goes, I hope you and yours had a somber, yet joyful holiday. It’s a weird holiday in the sense that it seems a little bit wrong to be TOO cheerful on a day when we’re supposed to be remembering all the ones who have given their life to the service of their country – yet, at the same time, we should also be joyful for the freedom we have BECAUSE of the sacrifice of so many people that came before us.

In some cultures, a funeral is a somber and serious mood. In other cultures, a funeral is simply another stage of our journey. And, in others, a death is something to  be celebrated with laughter, dancing and cheering as by doing so, you acknowledge the joy that person meant to you while they were alive. In those ways, that’s how I think we should view Memorial day.

If you feel the day should be one of somberness, sadness and respectful remembrance, that’s okay.

And if you feel ALL life should be celebrated and by doing so, you acknowledge brave sacrifice as a gift of freedom bestowed upon all of us, that should be okay too.

In the end, here’s to all the people – both alive and who have passed – who sacrificed so that so many could continue to relish whatever kind of definition “freedom” means to you.
