Hey ya’ll… since my baseball team was eliminated from our playoffs Tuesday night, that means no potential championship games on Saturday and Sunday. And because of THAT, I am able to make the following announcement:
I will be at the VA Comic Con in Richmond, VA all day on Sunday!!!
I couldn’t commit to the show in advance due to the unpredictable nature of my baseball schedule but since I am now free for Sunday, I contacted Brett and he’s saving me THE LAST Artist Alley Table right in front of the Vendor room. I will also be debuting my BRAND NEW STAND UP BANNER as well. I was gonna save that for the Baltimore Comic Con but you can be one of the first to see it on Sunday!
I’ll be doping the usual… selling my “You Can’t Print Flick” books, sketch cards and doing commissions as well.
See ya’ll on Sunday!!!

Okay, so my men’s senior baseball league came to an end last night with a 9-8 loss in a single elimination playoff. I actually posted today’s strip without a blog before heading to the game (I didn’t have enough time to write anything before I had to get out and deal with Washington DC traffic).
I had originally set out to write a long, detailed account of my experience last night but ultimately decided that was going to be too boring – especially for non-baseball fans. Suffice to say, as oddly as it sounds, I feel strangely okay about our season coming to an end. I know I played a good game and did a lot of positives to put my team in position to win and, maybe being an a previous team that won back-to-back championships the last two years makes defeat a little easier to swallow. I don’t know.
All I do know is that the first time in quite a few years, even though I’m tired from the game last night, this 44 year old body doesn’t feel broken down and needing a couple weeks of recovery as in years past.
Or maybe it’s just knowing that now my baseball season is over, I can fully immerse myself in to Capes & Babes and get ready for the last handful of conventions still on my schedule.
If that interests you more then listening to my baseball ramblings, you can find me at the following upcoming conventions:
Baltimore Comic Con
Baltimore, MD
August 28th and 29th.
InterventionCon
Rockville, MD
September 11th and 12th
NC Comic Con
Chapel Hill, NC
November 13th and 14th
VA Comic Con (2 Day show)
Richmond, VA
November 20th and 21st
If I add any more during now and the end of the year, I will let you all know.

Man, it’s kind of crazy how life throws curve balls at you, ain’t it?
As many of you know, last year at this time, I had been laid off from my previous job for a few months and struggling to find ANY kind of work – whether it was freelance or a full-time gig. Since that time though, I’ve got a new job that’s a better commute, better hours and more pay so that’s always great. But here’s the kicker… now I’m busy as hell!
In addition to my full-time job, I have a couple of freelance jobs going on right now (with incredible deadlines, of course), I just got finished working an a caricature commission, I completed a villain pin-up for my friend, Dan Nokes (more on Dan in just a minute) and I have the Baltimore Comic Con right around the corner (August 28th and 29th) with Intervention Con right after that (September 11-12th). It’s an incredibly busy time!
But speaking of Dan, I would be remiss if I didn’t give him at least partial credit for helping to inspire today’s strip. Thanks to one of his many Facebook posts, he mentioned the Legion of Doom and who cleans up after them. From there, I came up with today’s strip. So thank you Dan – is that good enough credit for you? LOL!
Also, I wanted to mention I did THIS little pin-up of Shego in anticipating for Baltimore Comic Con (click the image to see a bigger version):
The original Shego will be available for sale at Baltimore Comic Con for $30. Shego is 9×12″ on smooth bristol board and colored with Prismacolor markers and inks.
If you have any special character requests you would like to have done, please e-mail me at capesnbabes [at] gmail [dot] com and let me know which characters you would like me to draw and how to go about purchasing the commission – whether you will be at Baltimore Comic Con, Intervention Con, VA Comic Con or the NC Comic Con.
Thanks!
-Chris Flick
Just got back from the VA Comic Con a few hours ago and what did I do? I went into my studio and di this strip. Talk about dedication, people!
Thanks for all of you that came by my table today and either talked to me, bought something or did both. Your generosity, endorsements, support and kind words. I truly do appreciate every one of you that has discovered Capes & Babes and have become a fan of my wacky, sometimes bizarre and always oof-the-wall humor.
I’ll try to post pictures either here or on my Facebook page tomorrow.

CONVENTION APPEARANCE
Don’t forget, I’ll be at the VA Comic Con this Sunday from 10am – 4pm!
If you come to the show and mention the Sham-Call, I’ll give you a free prize!!! How bout that???!!!
****************************************************
As for today’s strip:
I’m with Marc. I never understood why, in modern day movies dealing with ghosts that talk to “regular people”, those regular people continue to engage in conversations with the ghost – even though they’ve been told numerous times no one else can SEE the ghost. So the regular folk continues to look like a crazy person.
Why not just go out and buy a Bluetooth device? Then, they could just APPEAR to be having a conversation with someone on a cell phone and not look so crazy.
But no… they never do. No wonder Roy has invented the SHAM-CALL!
On another note…
Onezumi is in the process of organizing and putting together an event that sounds like it will be something like Washington DC’s version of the New England Webcomics Weekend. She’s calling it INTERVENTION. Matt Stout talked about it a great deal tonight diring the recording of our Lightbox Podcast. If you’re a webcartoonist serious about your craft but also looking for more promotion, you should sign up at the Intervention forums and let Onezumi know!

I think this strip pretty much says it all. And it should but… since I can never leave well enough alone, look for even more Katsucon strips coming soon. Roy at Katsucon? That has DISASTER written all over it, doesn’t it???
ON TO SOME OTHER STUFF
This strip will be posted on Wednesday, February 3rd so it’ll be a little early for this but what the heck…
I want you all to wish my brother a happy birthday even though his B-Day isn’t until Thursday, February 4th. If you’re on Facebook, you can friend him here:
I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.
ON TO SOME EVEN MORE STUFF
I will OFFICIALLY be attending my first con of the 2010 year in Richmond, VA at the VA Comic Con February 28th. So come on out and say “Hi”. I’ll be reminding you all through the month.
And here’s more incentive for you to come to the show… if I do well and make over $150, I will get the Taskmaster tattoo I mentioned in my previous blog post so that I have it well in time for Heroes Con in June.
In the mean time, take care ya’ll.
Currently listening to Don’t Do Me Like That by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers on iTunes…

Today’s strip continues the ongoing story arch leading up to the “official” Union of Heroes guest strip that will be appearing next week at Union of Heroes.
In other news, I am vigorously working on a new site design thanks in no small part to Phil (aka Frumph). Phil is responsible for a lot of features in the WordPress ComicPress theme and he has helped a great many webcomic creator get his/her site up and operating. He has done no less for me as well. I still have some server-side issues (updates) that I have to deal with first before I can make the re-design happen but much of the heavy work has already been done.
I want to also mention that my very first con appearance in 2010 will be at the Virginia Comic Con on February 28th in Richmond, Virginia.
Blog Post Update:
Originally, last night, I added that I was looking for help in trying to get as many Capes & Babes “You Can’t Print Flick” books in as many hands as I possibly could for 2010 and I wanted your help to make this possible in the form of a Paypal Donate button.
The more I thought about this though, I really wasn’t satisfied with that because it never really offered YOU any incentive to hit that Paypal button. I always very much appreciate trying to give extra value for one’s dollar – if you’ve ever met me at a Con, you know this. I’m all about value, value, VALUE.
And asking you to simply donate to me so i could purchase more books didn’t REALLY give you anything in return. But since that time, I’ve take a look at what Spike (the creator behind Templar, Arizona) and others have done – or are doing – with Kickstarter and that sort of thing REALLY excites me as it allows a creator to offer a wide variety of different incentives to get people involved in the project. I personally believe this is a win-win for the fan and the creator. The creator gets money to support his/her project and the fan not only gets the thrill of knowing he or she helped finance a project but they also have physical proof that they did so in terms of merchandise or original art.
Soon, I will be posting a Kickstarter project not only for “You Can’t print Flick” but the second follow-up book which I’ve already named “You STILL Can’t Print Flick”. The second book is quite a few strips away from even thinking about starting but at least I already have a working title though, right?
If you have any questions, comments or praise about going the Kickstarter way, please, I want to know what you all think so by all means, feel free to leave a comment below.
Sincerely,
Chris Flick
I know I said that I would post a detailed post about the Virginia Comic Con but that will have to wait at least one more day. There’s a lot of great stuff I want to say and it’s simply too late in the evening to say everything.
When I do post it though, I’ll leave it on the main page so it won’t get lost. For now, I will just say it was a great show and there were lots of great people I got to talk to over the weekend – but I want to go into more details about all of that stuff.
So look for it soon.
In the main time, you can also check out my weekly web comic strip, “CMX Suite” today as well. You can find it at http://www.communitymx.com.
Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!
PS: My wife thinks this is the funniest Capes & Babes I’ve done so far, What do you think?
It’s 11:45pm Sunday night. I got home from the VA Comic Con at 7:30pm. Relaxed a little bit, got a little bite to eat and then started on this strip about 9:45pm or so. I got it complete just a few minutes ago so I’m gonna hit the sack.
VA Comic Con was absolutely fantastic and I will try to have a bigger write up by sometime tomorrow evening along with some pictures too.
Good night everyone. Hope you enjoy the strip!
-Chris
I wish I could say this strip wasn’t based on a real life event.
But I can’t.
That being said, this weekend is the VA Comic Con. I will be there Saturday and Sunday and will be on a panel about independent and small press comics on Saturday from 3:30 – 4:00pm. I will be offering a special incentive on the “You Can’t Print Flick” book… if you buy the book, you’ll get three 1.5″ buttons of Joey, Marc and Roy FOR FREE!
The buttons will be making their convention debut.
If you’re going to the con, I will be located next to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund table so I look forwar to seeing you there.
-Chris
