Calling Mr. Roboto…

Calling Mr. Roboto…

This strip was inspired by the THREE robo calls back-to-back that we received yesterday during my daughter’s birthday party. As soon as I hung up the phone on the third one, I practically had the strip in my head already.

The two robots – as the tag line says – comes courtesy of Lee Cherolis. In this day and age of the internet, it’s very common to make life-long friends with people you might never actually get to meet face to face. But fortunately, for one summer, that wasn’t the case with Lee.

After befriending Lee on the internet for a few months, we were finally able to meet and hang out together during the 2008 Baltimore Comic Con. It was him, Topher Divalla and Joe Combs. After the con, I invited them all back to my place for bar-b-que and to stay the night before Lee and a friend of his headed back home to Indianapolis.

It’s been a while since I’ve talked to Lee as I know he’s a real busy illustrator who just recently got married so his life is pretty ful at the moment. But if you get a chance, you should either follow him on Twitter or check out his multiple web sites.

Those two robots are his creation and I always liked them but never drew them before.

Until today’s strip anyway.

Power to the wolves…

Power to the wolves…

I can’t take absolute, 100% credit for the punchline for today’s strip. That was greatly inspired by a guest strip Joe Combs did for me back in November, 2008. You can see his strip here. Joe does a fantastic strip of his own called Business Casual. You should check it out. I know I do every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

And for all you young whipper snappers out there that don’t get the reference to Roy’s pose, go to Wikipedia or Google and search for “Black gloves during the Olympics” or you can just click here.

Also, for tonight, I did something a little spontaneous since Rob, Matt and I weren’t able to record our Lightbox – Illuminating Webcomics podcast this week. I made a LiveStream video! This was mostly a test as I could not, for the life of me, get my iMac built in video cam to work with UStream at all! If anyone has any suggestions on how to do that, please e-mail me, won;t you? My e-mail is capesnbabes [at] gmail.com.

If everything worked fine, here’s the video I recorded just a little while ago:

What to get your artist friends for Christmas…

Watch live streaming video from capesbabes at livestream.com

Hope that works!

Yummy Twilight Star…

Yummy Twilight Star…

I figured, with a werewolf AND a vampire in my strip, I absolutely HAD to do SOMETHING with the new Twilight movie coming out. For everyone that gets a huge laugh out of this, you can thank my wife – she gave me the idea that eventually turned into this strip (once her idea got into my head, festered for a while and became THIS twisted thing).

You all can praise (or blame) her!  LOL!

Another couple of things:

1) Thursday night, the Lightbox – Illuminating Webcomics podcast will be featuring my good friend, Joe Combs who does the comic strip “Business Casual“.

2) This weekend is the Virginia Comic Con in Richmond, Virginia. I will be there selling my book, “You Can’t print Flick” – the TPB of the first 200 Capes & Babes strips. Plus, if you buy the book, not only will you get an artist sketch of your favorite Capes & Babes character (you have one, don’t you?), you’ll also get 1.5″ buttons of Joey, Marc and Roy ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!

You can also get a free picture with Roy the Werewolf too! How ’bout that???!!!

I hope to see you all there this weekend!

Currently listening to “Paparazzi” by Lady Gaga…

She’s got a ticket to ride…

She’s got a ticket to ride…

I am officially declaring today “Capes & Babes Internet Day”. Why, you might ask – and, well, even if you don’t ask – here’s why anyway:

Today, I have a guest strip over at my good friend, Joe Comb’s site, Business Casual. But that’s not all.

My other good friend, Frank Zieglar, has ROY as a guest in his Kidd and Geezer strip.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL!!!

Because Ben Avery listened to our The Lightbox – Illuminating Webcomics podcast last night and immediately decided to follow me on Twitter, he became my 1000th Twitter follower and now gets a much coveted, OFFICIAL Capes & Babes t-shirt! You can follow Ben at http://www.twitter.com/whisperingloon.

The Lightbox – Illuminating Webcomics podcast is recorded every Thursday night at 8:00pm est on Talkshoe. Last night was our fourth show so there’s still plenty of time to get on board and catch the early shows before we get so big, you won’t know what to do with us. The podcast is brought to you by Rob Chandler, Matt Stout and myself.

Have a Happy Capes & Babes Internet Day today!

:-)

Girl talk…

Girl talk…

I want to mention this before I forgot… this Friday, my guest strip for Business Casual will be appearing on my good friend, Joe Combs’ site. You really need to go check out Joe’s strip (if you haven’t already). If you like Dilbert, you’re into the support or programming side of computers or you just suffer through tons of meetings at your work, Business Casual is for YOU!

A word of caution though… all this week, Joe is running guest strips so you need to click through his archives to REALLY be introduced to the strip!

Also, if you’re in the Washington DC area, October 31 (yes, Halloween), the National Walk for Autism will be taking place down on the mall (next to that big pencil in the sky known as the Washington Monument). So please come on down and support a GREAT cause!

Thanks!

The San Diego Comic Con…

The San Diego Comic Con…

How many of you were fortunate to go to THE CON this year? I was fortunate enough to see various clips of THE CON on G4 all this week. That was the gist of my experiencing THE CON.

Hopefully, for those that did get to go, you were able to find my good friends Joe Combs and Topher Davila somewhere on the floor. Maybe next year I might be able to go (especially if one of the three jobs I interviewed for comes through this week – Here’s hoping!).

Sucking expert…

UPDATE: I was mentioned on the Webcomics Weekly Episode #63 Podcast…
Well, SORT OF. If you have listened to the Podcast, when Scott talks about doing a Google Image search for Kris, he mentions something I did a little while before I started Capes & Babes. It was when Kris and Scott were going through Ray Ban sunglasses phase. I did a “Separated at Birth” joke with Kris. Here is the image Scott is talking about:

Kristopher Straub and Travis Junior

Now you all know the ONE Manga Roy has read and that would be “Deathnote”. :-)

How many of you are going to be in Dan Diego this weekend?
If you don’t know what’s going on in California this weekend, than you probably don’t know about the San Diego Comic-Con… one of biggest if not THE biggest Comic-Con’s in the country!

Topher's Blog header

If you ARE one of the lucky few are going, than I want to GREATLY encourage you all to try and take some time out and visit two of my friends who will be there: Topher Davila and Joe Combs. They will be at the same table and Topher will have a copy of my “You Can’t Print Flick” book if you want to see it. He will also be handing out some of my postcards for me as well. If you want to check out Joe’s work, you can check him out three times a week at Business Casual.

Since the SDCC is so big, Topher has been kind enough to post a location map on his blog where you can EASILY find him and Joe hanging out this week. There are also some freebies he is giving out but you have to mention the blog in order to get them. Go to his blog for more details.

Hope you all have fun.

I am EXTREMELY jealous!

Marc’s Christmas Lights…

Marc’s Christmas Lights…

As Christmas fast approaches this week, I wanted to take a moment and thank a few people who have been very inspirational to me – and this strip – during the past year. So, if you will indulge me for a few moments, here is my list:

Michael Lohmar
Michael helped me a great deal with my current Capes & Babes design. Together, we were able to cobble a workable 3-column layout based on the first version of the ComicPress template. This is well before the latest updates to ComicPress that includes several different layouts. We did this all our selves – and, really, truth be told, Michael did MOST of the really hard work so I am very thankful for his help.

Tony Moller
Tony work with me at my full-time job. And he has helped me a great deal understanding WordPress. He also hosts my site on his server so my thanks for that can not be stated enough. And he also helps me whenever I have any kind of compuetr or IT work that needs to be done. Thank you so much Tony.

Brad Guigar
Even before Capes & Babes came to fruition, Brad had already given me a lot of advice concerning my weekly web comic strip, “CMX Suite” that I do for Community MX. But since starting Capes & Babes, Brad has been very helpful in posting various strip links on his home page and being very supportive of what I’m doing with Capes & Babes. That’s a pretty significant thing considering how busy he is with his own comics, the Web Comics Weekly gig and his full-time newspaper job. Being a ex-newspaper graphic design grunt myself, I especially know how difficult that can be. So, thanks once again, Brad.

Danielle Corsetto
I have told this story many times to other creators privately… two years ago, at Baltimore Comic Con 2007, Danielle was kind enough to invite a complete stranger behind her desk to ask her a bunch of questions about her strip, her success and, basically, a bunch of other web comic-related questions. In the end, after being so kind to him, she asked to see some of his stuff and after the guy showed her what he did, she proceeded to kick the guy in the rear and chastise him for not having the guts to get a table and join in on the party known as “web comics” because he was certainly good enough. For whatever reason, that small little event helped kick start the motivation this artist needed to finally quit watching the game on the sidelines. So, Danielle, thanks for that kick in the butt.

Topher Davila, Lee Cherolis and Joe Combs (C4 Cartoonists Group)
Thanks guys for, basically, just being there and offering a great support group for a fellow cartoonist and convention-goer. Our Talkshoe chats are really great and they always either energize me or RE-energize me. So I thank you for that and look forward to the next time we can all see each other at the same convention – maybe Baltimore Comic Con 2009, perhaps?

Rosscott, Inc. and Chris Impink
Thanks for welcoming me into the Washington DC webcartoonists group and sharing with me all of the comic and convention going experiences you guys have learned over the years. Much appreciated.

Judi, Dani and Tyler
There’s really no way this list of thanks and appreciation would ever be complete if I didn’t include the three most important people in my life and the three that are REALLY responsible for me trying to make Capes & Babes the best strip it can be.

For Judi, thanks for putting up with my wanting to show you the latest strip I just completed – no matter what time that might actually be.

To Dani, thanks for being such a great little artist in your own right, girl. The world is full of possibilities for you and hope those possibilities just keep growing and growing.

To Tyler, even though autism is a maddening, perplexing and mesmerizing puzzle, I hope that whatever is going on in your brain fills you with the same kind of wonderment I have whenever I look into your eyes – or when you look into mine.

And to everyone else who has discovered this strip in the last year, I hope my crazy sense of humor fills you with a little bit of joy and that you appreciate the wacky world that’s in my head. Otherwise, I would have to start taking some SERIOUS medication! I hope that you will continue to enjoy this strip and to let others know about the crazy antics of Marc, Joey, Roy, Al the Alien, Veronica, the valley girl vampire and all the other wild characters I have so far introduced during the first year of this strip.

Even though it’s not the New Year yet, I hope the holidays (and the New Year) bring you nothing but joy.

Sincerely,

Chris Flick
