I mentioned in Twitterland and on Facebook that I was working on a few commissions. One is Mimic. I can’t show that one but I can show you the inks to the Inigo Montoya commission I started. The example will looks quite different since I will be coloring this guy with Prismacolor Markers. Here is Montoya. Click on the image to see a larger, more detailed version:
INTERVENTION PRE-CON COMMISSIONS
As it was with Baltimore Comic Con, if you are planning on attending InterventionCon next weekend (Sept. 10-12th), I am offering Pre-Con Commissions for $20. The commission is 9×112″ and hand-colored. Just send me an e-mail at capesnbabes [at] gmail.com with “Intervention Commission” in the header & I will send you more details.
LIGHTBOX PODCAST TONIGHT
In tonight’s recording, I recapped my experiences at the Baltimore Comic Con, we talked about InterventionCon and we reviewed Gabriel Dunston’s comic called “The Pit of Disaster” . It’s really worth checking out. During the podcast, I mentioned I thought Gabe’s art style reminded me of Space Invader Zim and possibly Aeon Flux but now that I think about it, Gabe’s style is probably more similar to Get Fuzzy… just something I see in the facial expressions and angular -like line work.
But go check out his work and see for yourself.
Lightbox Podcast – LIVE at InterventionCon
And speaking of InterventionCon and the Lightbox, I will be holding a panel on Saturday night at 9:00pm that’s completely devoted to the Lightbox Podcast. So, if you have any question or just want to listen to how Matt Stoutt and I do the show, this is the panel to attend. Unfortunately, I will be a solo act as Matt can’t make it to Intervention this year.
And I think that’s about it for tonight, folks.

C’mon now… what other title was I going to use for this strip? I just hope the Beach Boys’ lawyers don;t come after me like they’re coming after Katie Perry and Snoop Dog for their mentioning of “California Girls” in her song…

See you all in Baltimore this weekend!
Okay, so my men’s senior baseball league came to an end last night with a 9-8 loss in a single elimination playoff. I actually posted today’s strip without a blog before heading to the game (I didn’t have enough time to write anything before I had to get out and deal with Washington DC traffic).
I had originally set out to write a long, detailed account of my experience last night but ultimately decided that was going to be too boring – especially for non-baseball fans. Suffice to say, as oddly as it sounds, I feel strangely okay about our season coming to an end. I know I played a good game and did a lot of positives to put my team in position to win and, maybe being an a previous team that won back-to-back championships the last two years makes defeat a little easier to swallow. I don’t know.
All I do know is that the first time in quite a few years, even though I’m tired from the game last night, this 44 year old body doesn’t feel broken down and needing a couple weeks of recovery as in years past.
Or maybe it’s just knowing that now my baseball season is over, I can fully immerse myself in to Capes & Babes and get ready for the last handful of conventions still on my schedule.
If that interests you more then listening to my baseball ramblings, you can find me at the following upcoming conventions:
Baltimore Comic Con
Baltimore, MD
August 28th and 29th.
InterventionCon
Rockville, MD
September 11th and 12th
NC Comic Con
Chapel Hill, NC
November 13th and 14th
VA Comic Con (2 Day show)
Richmond, VA
November 20th and 21st
If I add any more during now and the end of the year, I will let you all know.

Man, it’s kind of crazy how life throws curve balls at you, ain’t it?
As many of you know, last year at this time, I had been laid off from my previous job for a few months and struggling to find ANY kind of work – whether it was freelance or a full-time gig. Since that time though, I’ve got a new job that’s a better commute, better hours and more pay so that’s always great. But here’s the kicker… now I’m busy as hell!
In addition to my full-time job, I have a couple of freelance jobs going on right now (with incredible deadlines, of course), I just got finished working an a caricature commission, I completed a villain pin-up for my friend, Dan Nokes (more on Dan in just a minute) and I have the Baltimore Comic Con right around the corner (August 28th and 29th) with Intervention Con right after that (September 11-12th). It’s an incredibly busy time!
But speaking of Dan, I would be remiss if I didn’t give him at least partial credit for helping to inspire today’s strip. Thanks to one of his many Facebook posts, he mentioned the Legion of Doom and who cleans up after them. From there, I came up with today’s strip. So thank you Dan – is that good enough credit for you? LOL!
Also, I wanted to mention I did THIS little pin-up of Shego in anticipating for Baltimore Comic Con (click the image to see a bigger version):
The original Shego will be available for sale at Baltimore Comic Con for $30. Shego is 9×12″ on smooth bristol board and colored with Prismacolor markers and inks.
If you have any special character requests you would like to have done, please e-mail me at capesnbabes [at] gmail [dot] com and let me know which characters you would like me to draw and how to go about purchasing the commission – whether you will be at Baltimore Comic Con, Intervention Con, VA Comic Con or the NC Comic Con.
Thanks!

This strip was inspired by the THREE robo calls back-to-back that we received yesterday during my daughter’s birthday party. As soon as I hung up the phone on the third one, I practically had the strip in my head already.
The two robots – as the tag line says – comes courtesy of Lee Cherolis. In this day and age of the internet, it’s very common to make life-long friends with people you might never actually get to meet face to face. But fortunately, for one summer, that wasn’t the case with Lee.
After befriending Lee on the internet for a few months, we were finally able to meet and hang out together during the 2008 Baltimore Comic Con. It was him, Topher Divalla and Joe Combs. After the con, I invited them all back to my place for bar-b-que and to stay the night before Lee and a friend of his headed back home to Indianapolis.
It’s been a while since I’ve talked to Lee as I know he’s a real busy illustrator who just recently got married so his life is pretty ful at the moment. But if you get a chance, you should either follow him on Twitter or check out his multiple web sites.
Those two robots are his creation and I always liked them but never drew them before.
Until today’s strip anyway.

Baltimore Comicon Costume Contest…
October 12th, 2009 | by ChrisOkay, just got home from the Baltimore Comicon (#bcc on Twitter) a few hours ago. There is SOOOOOOO much I have to say about the best two-day show I’ve ever had thus far since starting Capes & Babes but I will have to edit this posting tomorrow.
Right now, I’m chilling out with a couple of Mike’s Hard Lemonades (I don’t have to go to work tomorrow – YIPEE!) but I still wanted to post a quick cartoon for tomorrow’s strip. A longer Baltimore Comicon post will appear tomorrow but for now, here are some highlights:
1) Having my daughter at the show with her friend (sorry for any craziness they might have caused to other fellow BCC artists – they are only 14 but that’s still no excuse. Thank all you Artist Alley artist that had a good attitude about their, ummm… enthusiasm.
2) Meeting and talking to Lar from Least I Can Do.
3) Hanging with the Web Planet Collective at dinner Saturday night. Congrats on the Florida win, Ken (Rick the Stick).
4) Giving Scott Kurtz a copy of my book. Hey, he was one of the guys who said I should start doing strips with my own characters three years ago at Baltimore Comicon so I figured it was only right to do so.
5) Seeing my old art school buddy John Dimes and shocking him as I called out his name (as he was walking aimlessly by my table no less…)
6) And lastly, to all of you that attended Baltimore and were supportive enough to buy something from me, commission a sketch from me or purchase the book. Thanks to all of you, this has been my best con ever!!!
Sincerely,
Chris Flick
You guys didn’t seriously think you saw the last of I.R. Hungré, did you???
For those of you that might just be reading Capes & Babes for the first time, I.R. Hungré made his Capes & Babes debut back in April. You can check out the start of his story arc here. I had a lot of fun writing those strips with I.R. and hopefully, you had a lot of fun reading them as well. So… heeeeeee’s baaaaack!!!
In other news…
As you can see by that little graphic, I will be in Baltimore this coming weekend (October 10 & 11). I will be in ARTIST ALLEY at Table #26.
Now, sometimes, the table arrangements can get a little out of whack so if I’m not at Table #26, I should be very close. In any case, I will have the stand-up of Roy with me so he’ll be pretty hard to miss.
I will also be selling copies of my book, “You Can’t Print Flick” – the collection of the first 200 strips of Capes & Babes with a TON of extra content! I will be drawing full-color commissions again and selling my (almost) infamous Coffee shirt. In addition to that, I will be offering a brand new print of my cartoon, “Darth Puff – the Staypuff Marshmellow Man as a Sith Lord”.
So, if you’re in the Baltimore area this weekend, come to the Convention Center and check out the show!
Also, remember, we will be recording another episode of The Lightbox – Illuminating Webcomics this Thursday night on Talkshoe at 8:00pm EST.
-Chris
On my Twitter account a day or so ago, I mentioned that my goal this weekend was to get four strips done in one day (three Capes & babes strips and my Tuesday “CMX Suite” strip for Community MX). Well, that didn’t QUITE happen.
Instead, I ended up scripting eight Capes & babes strips and two CMX Suite Strips. As for drawing, I ended up only getting two Capes strips and Tuesday’s CMX Suite strip complete. But over all – especially with all those strips scripted, I don;t think that’s a bad day at all. I know exactly where the next couple of weeks are going with Capes & Babes so I won’t have to be “guessing” as I’m doing the strips.
And, as promised, here is the Roy stand-up I created for Pittsbugh and Baltimore Comic Cons that I will be attending in September and October:

This was taken at Little Fish Comics in Fredericksburg, Virginia two weeks ago. Wnat to see more pictures in my Flickr account? You can do so by clicking here.
Well, that’s it for now. Enjoy the strip.
-Chris
Okay… I’m slowly but surely getting ready for Pittsburgh and Baltimore Comic Con in September and October. Here’s what I have in store for both conventions:
1) A five foot tall foam core cut-out of Roy the Werewolf (he looks pretty awesome if I do say so myself).
2) A new banner to go along the front of my table (from www.gotprint.com)
3) My wife bought be a chest mannequin for our COFFEE t-shirts so that’s gonna look awesome on the table!
4) I just ordered more “You Can’t Print Flick” books from www.lulu.com. They were shipped today!
5) 2500 New postcards (old design though) from www.gotprint.com
I think that’s about it. Things are slowly beginning to come together. Each convention show, I learn a little bit more and add a few more things to make myself look more “professional” each time. Here’s hoping the same will happen for Pittsburgh & Baltimore!
-Chris
This Sunday (8/23/09), I will be at Little Fish Comics in Fredericksburg, Virginia doing a book signing and sketches. I will also have the stand-up of Roy the Werewolf that I completed today. Roy stands roughly 5 feet tall and is in full color.
I’ll bring my digital camera with me to Little Fish so I can take pictures of Roy by my table.
Also, I will be bringing Roy with me to the Pittsburgh Comic Con next month (Sept. 10 – 13th) as well as Baltimore Comic Con (October 10-11th) as well.
I hope to see you all there!
-Chris
