Mr. Engalls was my high school English teacher. I had his English class when I was a freshman and then later on, as a senior. He was a big influence on me in terms of writing as he encouraged all of his students to write, write, write. He didn’t care that I wrote stories about super-powered mutants – just as long as I made them interesting.

One of the things he used to say was that sometimes, a writer will discover that his/her characters are taking them places they – the writer – never expected. A few years later, that same nugget of information would once again be repeated in severla creative writing classes I took while at Radford University.

I mention all of this because when I first started this current story line, I didn’t know where it was going to end. I only had a series of connected plot points but where they were going to lead, I had no idea.

Well, through the course of writing these strips, I suddenly found that path that will end up leading to the conclusion. But I’m not so sure if I actually discovered as much as my characters did.

So thanks, Mr. Engalls, for instilling in me the knowledge that when a character (or characters) start leading you somewhere, you should simply hold out your hand and allow them to lead you to wherever they are going. The surprise is usually quite worth it.

I hope when this story line ends, you all will end up feeling the same way.
