So… what exactly is going on in today’s Capes & Babes, you might ask? Well, good question. Here’s the answer:

Not too long ago, my Webcomic Alliance partner, Dawn Griffin, ran a cereal box fan art contest on her site. I was digging all of the designs so much that I told her that whoever wins her contest, I would also do a cross-promotional story line in Capes & Babes featuring the winning cereal box design. That whole thing with “Griffin Enterprises”? Well, you’ll just have to keep reading, now won’t you?

But wait… what happened on Wednesday?

For those of you that didn’t catch my Tweet or my Facebook past on Tuesday afternoon, here’s why there wasn’t a strip posted on Wednesday…

As many of you may know, from 1992 to 2010, I played in a Men’s Adult and Senior Baseball League – yes, baseball. Not softball. But after so many years of playing in multiple leagues and coaching various teams, I was getting burnt out. Probably because while I was playing, I was also trying to juggle this webcomic thing and going to various summer conventions.

But in the last couple of years, the conventions I have gone to have started to yield more and more profit. So, in 2011, I decided to take a year off. And I found I didn’t miss it nearly as much as I thought I might. That’s the true sign of being burnt out on something, isn’t it?

This last Spring though, when I was asked to help coach a local Little League team, it felt really great getting out and getting back in to throwing, fielding and teaching kids the game I really was obsessed with all those years. And because of that, I have started feeling a bit more of a pang to get back out on the field again.

So, on Tuesday afternoon, I got an e-mail from one of my former teams that asked if I might be willing to help them out since they were going to be short players that evening and didn’t want to forfeit the game. If I said “yes”, that would mean I couldn’t post a strip for Wednesday as I wouldn’t be home until a little after Midnight.

There was a long debate within myself whether I really wanted to miss a single update or go see how rusty I might have gotten after a two year layoff. Obviously, I chose to play the game as I thought I deserved a night off from the strip to try something selfish on my end.

I ended up having a really great time and, although I was extremely tired and spent after the game, I wasn’t nearly as sore the next day as I thought I might be. So… let this be a fair warning to you right now… this may happen again before the end of the summer and if this same team needs a player or two, I already told them I’d do it – so that may mean I might have to miss another future strip update (possibly). We shall see.
