I mentioned in Twitterland and on Facebook that I was working on a few commissions. One is Mimic. I can’t show that one but I can show you the inks to the Inigo Montoya commission I started. The example will looks quite different since I will be coloring this guy with Prismacolor Markers. Here is Montoya. Click on the image to see a larger, more detailed version:

Inigo Montoya Commission

INTERVENTION PRE-CON COMMISSIONS

As it was with Baltimore Comic Con, if you are planning on attending InterventionCon next weekend (Sept. 10-12th), I am offering Pre-Con Commissions for $20. The commission is 9×112″ and hand-colored. Just send me an e-mail at capesnbabes [at] gmail.com with “Intervention Commission” in the header & I will send you more details.

LIGHTBOX PODCAST TONIGHT

In tonight’s recording, I recapped my experiences at the Baltimore Comic Con, we talked about InterventionCon and we reviewed Gabriel Dunston’s comic called “The Pit of Disaster” . It’s really worth checking out. During the podcast, I mentioned I thought Gabe’s art style reminded me of Space Invader Zim and possibly Aeon Flux but now that I think about it, Gabe’s style is probably more similar to Get Fuzzy… just something I see in the facial expressions and angular -like line work.

But go check out his work and see for yourself.

Lightbox Podcast – LIVE at InterventionCon

And speaking of InterventionCon and the Lightbox, I will be holding a panel on Saturday night at 9:00pm that’s completely devoted to the Lightbox Podcast. So, if you have any question or just want to listen to how Matt Stoutt and I do the show, this is the panel to attend. Unfortunately, I will be a solo act as Matt can’t make it to Intervention this year.

And I think that’s about it for tonight, folks.

Convention Tips #433…

Convention Tips #433…

Did any of you go to the Baltimore Comic Con 2010 show this past weekend? I had a table there and this is a brief little re-cap of my experiences Saturday and Sunday…

I want to first start out by saying I had gone to the previous 7 Baltimore Comic Cons as a fan – when it was the ONLY Comic Book Convention in town. I even went to the post-poned and delayed 9/11 show years ago when air travel was sparse and the show joined forces with SPX… It’s only been the last three years that I’ve had an artist alley table so I think I’m uniquely qualified to say this year was the biggest I’ve ever seen the show… bigger names, more artists…

I will also go on the record and predict that within the next five years, I would be SHOCKED if they don’t expand show to three days, ala Heroes Con. If you saw the crowds that were lined up AROUND THE ENTIRE CONVENTION CENTER on Saturday morning, you know there is a demand for such a thing. But Baltimore can be expensive – at least in terms of parking around the Convention Center, so we’ll see.

The First Day (Saturday):
Actually, my Baltimore Comic Con started about a week before as I took up my good friend, Tyler James’s advice and offered pre-con commissions for $20 as I was increasing my price by $10 this year. Three people took advantage of that so I had a lot of work to do leading up to the show. Plus, since I only have a single book to sell for now, I knew I needed something “new” on my table so I decided to put a sketchbook mini-comic together and sell that.

The combination completing a couple of freelance gigs I had that week, working on the commissions and putting the mini-books together made the week extremely hectic for me & I didn’t get everything done until about 2:30am Friday night.

I live 90 minutes outside of Baltimore so the plan was to get up and be out the door by no later than 7:00am Saturday morning. That would have put me into Baltimore by 9:00am at least – with plenty of time to check- in and get my table set up.

I woke up late and didn’t get on the road until 7:45pm – but closer to 8:00 once I got through the McDonald’s drive thru. Made it to the show by 9:30 but now I was rushing and trying to scramble to get my badge and check in. Not good when you’re a solo act and you’re lugging a 5 foot foam core werewolf around.

But I was able to finally get everything set up by 10:15am. Very inconvenient for my tablemates but they were EXTREMELY understanding – and kind of impressed I was able to set up so fast. You would think, though, that such a bad start would be indicative of how things would go for the rest of the weekend – but no. The worst part of the show was that delay. Everything else went as smooth as silk.

  • The pre-con sketch idea was a fantastic idea and people were commenting on them as I had them prominently displayed in my book in the center of the table. Pre-con sketches give you the ability to have artwork ready for your customers and still hand out and smooze people as they walk by your table.
  • I was selling the mini-sketchbooks for $10 a pop, but was also offering them free with a book purchase. That went over EXTREMELY well for Saturday – although in hindsight, I should have just knocked $5 off the sketchbook and sold the book & sketchbook combo for $20. But still, people were buying the book on Saturday.
  • Apparently, Todd MacFarlane was signing all day on Saturday & was located right around the corner from where my table was so that might have explained the huge amount of foot traffic we seemed to have had in Artist Alley that day. I mean, it looked like a Mall during peak Christmas Shopping Hours.
  • Usually, I sell at least 1-5 t-shirts at Baltimore but I could not get anyone one to bite on those. I only have a single t-shirt design but I couldn’t move them at all. I hate to take the shirts off my table because they can sell… it’s just very unpredictable sometimes. I’ll have to see if I can figure out a package deal for the shirt as well.
  • My sketch cards seemed to be pretty popular too. I think they will pretty much be a staple at my table for now on.
  • Over the course of the show, Tyler & I were talking about buying a bulk order of protective binders that people like to put posters and other things in while at a con. I thought this might be a great idea for commissions… once I finish a commission, I’d put it in a protective sleeve and put it on a mini easel on my table to show it off. I did this for a commission I did for one of those black comic book covers and I had a couple of people inquire if it was for sale and were disappointed when I told them it had already been sold. I would add $5 for the protective sleeve.

The second day (Sunday)…

On Saturday, I had made my table fee back on Saturday and paid for my hotel room as well, so Sunday was going to be all gravy. Unfortunately, it ended up being the tale of two different days. Meaning… Saturday was my “book selling day” while Sunday ended up being my “Commissions Day”. I didn’t do any commissions on Saturday but I sold a ton of books. I didn’t sell any books on Sunday but did quite a few commissions (and a couple of sketch cards too).

All in all, I had a great, exhausting time at Baltimore but as always, the best part of the show is all the after hour networking you get to do with other creators. I had a great dinner Saturday night with a former marvel inker that’s trying to work his way back into the biz after leaving it for a while, a husband & wife web comic team, and a few other independent/small press creators.

After dinner, I hung with Tyler and Dawn Griffin in the upper section of the Pratt Street Ale House and talked “shop” until close to 12 midnight Saturday night. After the show on Sunday, I lingered in Baltimore for a few extra hours so I wouldn’t have to deal with Maryland/Northern Virginia traffic and had a great dinner with my table neighbor, Rob Anderson (who I already knew) and a writer friend of his. We again ate at the Pratt Street Ale House. I highly recommend the Iron Man Angus burger!

So that was MY weekend. How was yours?

Baltimore Comic Con 2010…

Just got back a little while ago… might have had an actual strip up tonight but instead, I opted to stay in Baltimore a little longer after the show ended so I could have dinner with my good friend (and as it turned out – my table neighbor), Rob Anderson who writes Animal Control for his company, Panda Dog Press.

Baltimore Comic Con 2010 deserves a huge write up… so huge that it might actually have to wait until a few days so I can fully and adequately recover! :-)

Banana-nanna-fo-fanna…

Banana-nanna-fo-fanna…

Okay, so by now, you either have the Banana-fo-fanna or the Banana Splits theme song stuck stuck in your head. In any case, my job is now done for the day – and just in case you DON’T have the theme song in your head, I decided to add this little gem for the past:

This strip was inspired by the fact that today is the National Banana Lover’s Day. Don’t believe me? Well check out THIS website for proof.

Also, it’s the unofficial and less well known “webcartoonists making fun of bananas” day as well. A bunch os have decided to have a banana themed joke for today’s comic strip. That would include the following:

  • The Wannabe Pirates
  • Promises Promises
  • Robot Beach
  • Yet Another Fantasy Gamer Comic
  • Capes & Babes
  • Life’s a Witch
  • Neko the Kitty
  • Beartoons

Check them all out and see what they’ve done for the official Banana Day!

Oh, and remember, I will be in Artist Alley at Table A105 at the Baltimore Comic Con this weekend! And, just like the strip says, if you mention bananas, Banna Splits or you come up to my table and start signing the Banana Splits them song, I WILL GIVE YOU SOMETHING FOR FREE!

Red Robin, Red Robin…

Red Robin, Red Robin…

Okay, I have to make a big apology in the blog tonight. Someone I know gave me a suggestion that I have Marc interview Red Robin but I’m not sure if that was it or not. I just remember not getting Red Robin out of my head and, somewhere along the way, came up with this twist. I think.

I just can’t remember who gave me the Red Robin suggestion and whether or not their idea dealt with the Red Robin restaurant as well. So, I apologize for that.

If you gave me the suggestion, please say so in the Comments section so I can give you proper credit, okay?

Thanks!

Eat, pray, cry…

Eat, pray, cry…

This one is way late… mainly because I was enjoying such a great conversation (disguised as an interview) with Onezumi as she and her main man, Harknell, talked all about InterventionCon tonight with me and Matt as part of our weekly Lightbox – Illuminating Webcomics podcast.

As such, I’ll probably have a much more lengthy blog update post tomorrow. For now, I’m going to bed.

-Chris

Last night’s Lightbox Recap:

Oni and Harnell

Oni & Harnell - the masterminds behind Intervention Con

Hello everybody. This is the recap and lengthier blog post that I said I would write last night. I just wanted to thank Onezumi and Harknell for braving the wonderful world of Talkshoe last night and talking to Matt Stout and I and discussing all things InterventionCon-related. Matt and I normally record the show for only an hour but we all talked for almost two hours, so obviously, we were having a good time.

I also want to thank the ten or so people that listened to us live and participated with questions in the chat room. I also have to apologize for demolishing Hue-x-ley’s (did I get it right this time?) name pronunciation last night. I can be brutal with unfamiliar names sometimes and always cringe when I have to pronounce a name I’m unsure about.

But anyway, I met Onezumi for the first time a couple of years ago at Katsucon 14 in Crystal City – I’m pretty sure it was #14. I wasn’t there as an artists. I was only there because a) my daughter really wanted to go and b) I knew there were going to be a lot of webcomic creators there – including Brad, Kris and Dave from Halfpixel. Capes & Babes wasn’t even a small blimp on the webcomics radar screen yet… I think I had only gone to Heroes that summer and probably had less than 200 strips online at the time. But I had already started networking and getting to know a lot of other more established webcomic creators and those that were at Katsucon all suggested that I meet and introduce myself to Onezumi since she was really responsible for the the webcomic presences that was at Katsucon that year.

If you have ever been to an anime con before, you know it can be even more crazy and chaotic than your typical comic book convention. As such, it was extremely hard to track down Oni mainly because she was sooooo busy trying to help out the webcomic people that had tables at the con and, since I had never met her before, I didn’t know what she looked like. But after looking like an out-of-state tourist asking for directions in New York City, enough webcomic people were able to finally point her out to me and I went up and introduced myself.

Again, Capes & Babes was in its infancy at the time so she very easily could have brushed me off or pretended to be interested in my little comic strip endeavor and simply forgotten about me as soon as I left her immediate presence. But she never did. Instead, she asked me for my card, gave me her’s and told me to get in touch with her in a few months when BaltiCon 43 rolls around because she was looking for new creators to display there.

It’s exactly because of this attitude with new, old and trying to get old webcomic creators that I absolutely KNOW InterventionCon will not only be hugely popular, it will also be a great success.

So, if you’re not doing anything September 10 – 12 and you live in the Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia Tri-state area, you absolutely need to come to this event. Everything you need to know about InterventionCon can be found on the Con’s website but for directions and anything else, you can just click THIS LINK to see more information.

I’ll be there and so will so many other webcomic creators, artists, musicians, bloggers and internet enthusiasts. It truly will be Your Online Life, In Person.

Impressive interruption…

Impressive interruption…

Originally, I had another idea for today’s strip but at the last minute, I decided to switch things up a bit once I came up with this idea. So, instead, my ode to Scott Pilgrim strip will run on Friday.

Basically, I came up with this idea after participating in a forum discussion where I kept seeing (and reading) people using “apples to oranges” and “that’s a straw man argument”. I just thought it might be incredibly funny if the Wizard of Oz Scarecrow took great offense at “straw man” being thrown around in andebate.

Future encore…

Boy, you would think, after turning Elijah Pipkin into a Hollywood sensation, he’d return my calls. Instead, I can only get in tough with “his people” these days.

I tell you, after these last few strips, the dude has gone “all Hollywood” on us.

The big jerk.

:-D

Writer vs. Artist…

Writer vs. Artist…

Sooooooooooooooooo typical of a writer, huh? They think they as SOOOOOOOOOOO superior just because they can be productive while sitting on the toilet or being stuck in traffic. When was the last time you heard of an artist drawing a comic book page while sitting on the john (and please, no Rob Liefield jokes… that’s too easy).

In any case, revenge is sweet, isn’t it???  :-)

Hahahahaha! Again, I want to thank my good friend, Elijah Pipkin for being such a great sport about this and letting me have fun with his Capes & Babes alternate universe self.

And in other news…

OH MY GOD! IT’S FRIDAY THE 13TH!!!

But does anyone really care about that any more??? Just wondering.  :-)
