Okay, so something a little bit different for today’s Capes & Babes strip. This was going to be my next Tuesday strip for Community MX but I thought it would be more appropriate to be here then there.
The only problem though is that this strip marks the VERY FIRST TIME “the artist” for Capes & Babes has made an appearance here (other than the book cover, of course). But anyway, I hope you all appreciate my little tongue-in-cheek look at the job search situation.
I thought it was just a way to look adversity in the eye and say “I’m laughing at you and I’ll overcome this situation through humor” but like many things, people can have a strange way of seeing humor. many people thus far seem to be really put off by this cartoon though so I don’t know. What do YOU think?
ALSO…
On my Twitter feed yesterday, I mentioned that I am opening Capes & babes up for Guest Strip submissions. If you are interested, here is what you need to do:
1) Draw a strip that’s somehow related to Capes & Babes (that shouldn’t be too hard seeing as everything from Zombies to Where the Wild things are creatures have appeared in the strip).
2) The strip has to be a maximum of 858pixels wide. It can be any height you want (within reason) but it can’t be wider than 858pixels or my WordPress theme will break apart.
3) Send the strips to capesnbabes@gmail.com with “Guest Strip Submission” in the subject heading.
That’s it. That’s all you have to do.
Oh wait. There is one more thing.
4) Have fun.

So I decided that since yesterday’s filler strip had a big huge “Happy Memorial Day” headline, I’d go ahead and keep that filler strip up as a way to honor our veterans. I know that will disrupt the “flow” of the archives a bit but I think it’s worth it in order to show some respect to the sacrifices ALL veterans make on our behalf.
In other news today, one of the reasons this strip is a bit late getting up is due to the fact that I had a phone interview with an IT recruiter today. I have a sit-down interview with them on Friday so we’ll see how that goes.
As far as this week’s schedule goes, I don;t know what I’m going to do. If I can get a strip done tonight, I will post it tomorrow. If not, I might be forced to go to a Thursday and Saturday schedule JUST FOR THIS WEEK. I apologize for that but this was the first time I had ever gone to a four day con before so my schedule is COMPLETELY screwed up. I hope you all will forgive me this once.
-Chris
If yoiu are reading this strip today, I appreciate the support but really, it’s Memorial Day (at least here in the States). You should be out thanking a veteran and enjoying the national holiday. But again, I do appreciate you guys coming here.
As you can tell, there’s something unusual about today’s strip. Today’s strip has to be a temporary filler strip until I get home this evening. I have today’s strip done – but seeing as I am in Balticon 43 right now, I don’t have access to a scanner so I will not be able to post the strip until either later on this evening OR tomorrow morning.
The good news is that you’ll have your first taste of back-to-back Capes & Babes strip s on Tuesday and Wednesday. So that’s good, right?
And as the temporary cartoon above says… I am still looking for a full-time position in the Washington DC area as a web or graphic designer (who can illustrate). So if you know anyone, please have them contact me at chris.s.flick [a] gmail.com.
Thanks everyone.

Thanks!
Okay… rule of thumb for cartoonists who want to put a vampire with white skin in their strip but then ALSO put that same vampire in a Powergirl outfit… maybe not a good decision. C’mon, white on white? Not great when you’re adding COLOR to your strip.
But hey, I think this one came out pretty okay. What do you all think?
Again, maybe not a strong HAHA strip but don’t worry, I’m leading up to something.
And trust me, you have only BEGUN to see “Fang and Fury”…
A reminder:
This entire Memorial Day weekend (starting later on today), I will be at Balticon 43. I will be selling a variety of things, INCLUDING the just recently published “You can’t print Flick” book. So if you’re in the Hunt Valley, Maryland area this weekend, c’mon by! I would love to see you there!
-Chris
Remember a while back when I talked about how much I enjoyed creating titles for my comics? For those that missed that post, I mentioned that, for the most part, coming up with interesting titles was fun and I enjoyed the challenge of creating a title that plays off the strip in some way.
Most of the time, the titles are pretty easy for me to come up with but not with this particular one. “A silly little idea” was actually the fourth title I eventually settled on. That doesn’t happen often but for today’s strip, it did.
Now for an appearance update:
Don’t forget… I will be at Balticon 43 this weekend – and I mean ALL this weekend! I will be selling the first edition of “You can’t print Flick” – my very first self-published book. So, if you’re in the Hunt Valley, Maryland area this weekend, stop in at the con and buy the book!
Hope so to see a great many of you there this weekend!
-Chris
Poor Hank Pym – he just can’t catch a break at all, can he?
Also, my daughter and I went to go see “Star Trek” yesterday (Sunday) afternoon. I have to say, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Now, I’m a pretty old time TV show Star Trek fan but I was never “married” to the show like a lot of other Star Trek fanatics are so maybe I had the right frame of mind going into the movie. The only thing I had a little bit of problem with was Spock having a relationship – I’m not going to go into spoilers here, but for those that have seen the movie, you know what I mean.
That was really the only negative point I really had with the “re-boot”, so to speak. I could get a little picky and say I wish Eric Bana would have had some kind of accent as a Romulan war general… I don’t particularly imagine Romulans as talking as normal as you or I might. On television, they always seemed to have a super superiority complex and talked as such. That seemed missing from Eric – but that is a SUPER minor point. It certainly didn’t distract from the movie. And I rather enjoyed all the nods to the TV show – including the character backgrounds like Sulu being a sword fighter. Fans of the old TV show will easily recognize the shout outs to them in this movie – and even a few references to “The Wrath of Khan” as well. I thought that was particularly super as well.
On to other news…
In the last two days, I have written 12 cover letters and sent out 12 resumes. It will be Monday morning when you’ll probably read this so by then, I will be repeating the process all over again.
Wish me luck!
Thanks!

So earlier yesterday, I posted a question on Twitter (capesnbabes) asking the people who follow me: Would you rather get Capes & Babes 5 times a week but in black & white OR would you rather get Capes & Babes in color but still only three times a week?
For those of you that would like to see Capes & Babes 5 times a week, do you still feel that way after today’s strip?
For those of you that would like to see Capes go daily, I need to do a couple of things before that can happen:
1) I need to build up a bigger buffer
2) I have to write more in advance than I am now
3) I need find a full-time job to replace my old one
But I also need something from you guys too… If I go daily, we have to make it beneficial for both of us. That means you guys have to put in some work from your loose change department. And given my current situation that holds true even more.
But I’ve never been one to simply beg for now reason so I’m asking all of you… what would you like to get in return for donations?
1) Regular wallpaper designs?
2) More “Stupor Heroes”?
3) Character sketches?
Give me some suggestions here and I’ll see what I can do. In the mean time, I am COMPLETELY open for commission work. And, if you liked the design of my business card, hey, I’m willing to do one for you too!
And on the last note…
If ANYONE knows someone at LeapFrog Solutions in Oakton, Virginia, please put in a good word for me. LeapFrog is an advertising agency and I just sent them my resume and portfolio package – so if you know someone over there, let me know, okay?
Thanks. That’s all for now.
-Chris
Before I begin my blog, I feel it’s only fair that I start off by apologizing to my friend, Tovias (http://www.twitter.com/tovias) as he’s really responsible for coming up with the idea for this strip – only… it really wasn’t an “idea”. It was a “real life event” that he twittered about and, as I told him then, “That’s SO going into the strip!”. So, Tovias, to paraphrase a certain beer commercial, “This strip’s for YOU!”.
Now on to other stuff…
If anyone has any friends or contacts at LeapFrog Solutions in Oakton, Virginia, can you please pass along a good word for me? I am getting ready to apply to them and could use all the good karma and well wishes I can get.
Here’s some stuff I have been working on for my job search:

And for a close-up of the art that’s on the back of the card:

Thanks everyone.

This isn’t the first time I did the typical webcomic thing and made a fart joke but it’s probably the best one I’ve done so far.
I’m going to have a longer updated post tomorrow about the Virginia Little League Challenger Division Jamboree that took place this weekend in Virginia Beach. Needless to say, my family JUST got home a few short hours ago and I immediately made plans for posting this strip. It was done but hadn’t yet been scanned.
Also, please take note of the new book preview image. If you have any questions on how to order a book, please e-mail me at capesnbabes [at] gmail.com.
Thanks!
-Chris
I want to thank everyone so far that have either sent me e-mails, Tweets or left a comment here on this blog about my current job situation. Your kind thoughts and (hopefully) helpful networking leads will help prevent me from being out of work for too long.
Now, with that being said, the nice thing is the last two days have allowed me to finally complete 95% of the first Capes & Babes book. I’m still going over some tweaks and correcting typos and everything but the book is done. Essentially.
Sometime next week, I will post a pre-order graphic right below the strip so if you’re interested, here’s what you will find in the first ever Capes & Babes trade paperback collection:
- 164 pages filled with the first 212 strips of Capes & Babes.
- Some director’s commentary on a select number of strips.
- Capes & Babes Sketchbook “extras” – featuring detailed notes on background characters that only appeared in a handful of strips.
- Random sketches featuring a variety of characters.
- A “How to draw Marc, Joey and Roy” section.
- A sample of some of my favorite “CMX Suite” strips.
- Sketches and convention commissions.
- A sample of my T-shirt design work.
- And… never before seen ANYWHERE… you get eight – that’s right, EIGHT samples of my college strip. Again… never before seen ANYWHERE except in this book and the newspaper they were published in!!!
- A full color cover.
- And a forward by the king of puns himself, Brad Guigar!
If that interests you, send me an e-mail at capesnbabes [at] gmail.com to find out how you can get an exclusive artist edition (artist sketch and signed cover). This is exclusive offer to ALL pre-orders!!!
