Lloyd Dobler’s Curse…

If anyone is a fan of the movie, “Say Anything”, you should all recognize the name “Lloyd Dobler” - and if you don’t, than how can you TRULY say you’re a fan of the movie???

“Lloyd Dobler” was the name of John Cusack’s character in the movie. Likewise, “Diane” was Ione Skye’s character as well. To be truthful, when I was in high school, I both admired and hated John Cusack (at least in a “I wish I was HIM sort of way)… mainly because I identified so much with so many of the characters he had played over the years… from “One Crazy Summer”, “A Sure Thing” to “Better Off Dead”. He always seemed to be characters that had similar traits as I did - the same sort of off-brand goofiness - especially his character in “Better Off Dead”. So I couldn’t resist the opportunity to make a little fun of his Lloyd Dobler character as I was in the midst of creating this storyline. I hope you are enjoying it as it is quickly coming to an end. But before that happens, what are some of YOUR favorite John Cusack movies and/or roles?

Also…
It may come as a shock to many of you but every now and then, us artists types will suddenly be inundated with a huge ego boost - whether it’s really warranted or not. Yesterday was such a day for me.

Now, I’m sure this is an absolute and 100% coincidence but yesterday, in Brad Guigar’s strip, one of his main, non-super powered characters refers to another male super powered dude as being “a Cape”. You don’t believe me? Check it out here!

Again, this is probably 110% coincidence but I’m going to pretend Brad’s use of the word “Cape” to describe a male dude with super powers was completely and utterly due to MY influence.

Because, if anything, with great ego comes great delusion too.

:-)

Currently listening to The Watchmen Soundtrack that I just downloaded from iTunes.

PS: Yesterday was my daughter’s 14th birthday. Happy Birthday (again) Dani!

    Happy Birthday to your daughter.

Hands down, my favorite John Cusak movie is “Grosse Point Blank.” I’m also a huge fan of “Serendipity,” but there is just so much quotable goodness in GPB that it can’t be beat, IMO.

    “Popcorn!”

    Hey Kardiac,
Thanks! My daughter had a pretty good birthday party (I think). LOL!

Gross Point Blank is pretty funny. I’m still pretty partial to “One Crazy Summer” and “Better Off Dead” but I also enjoyed “High Fidelity” too - HF isn’t as laugh out loud as some of his other movies but as I get older, I seem to appreciate it more. :-)

I’ll be honest, I’ve always loved Cusac, in pretty much everything he has ever done. I must have watched GPB 1000 times. but Pushing Tin was awesome too. Better Off Dead will probably always be my favorite though. thats the one that really gets me every time.
Oh yeah, and War Inc is pretty awesome too. definitely worth checking out.

    Hey wdwillis,
Pushing Tin was pretty good. I never saw War Inc. I’ll have to check that out. Some other favorite Cusack movies I have enjoyed:

    16 Candles
(okay, not a big role for him in that movie but it’s still funny watching him playing an ultra nerd)

    Martian Child
I recently caught this as really thoroughly enjoyed the movie)

    Must Love Dogs
Hey! I’ve been a HUGE Diane Lane fan ever since “Streets of Fire” so I will always have a soft spot for this movie. ;-)

    Eight Men Out
C’mon! It’s a baseball movie! And it’s a real shame what happens to his character (Buck Weaver) in the movie AND in real life…

    Con Air

There are others but one movie that I liked his performance but the movie just weirded me out was Being John Malkovich. I mean, I STILL see him trapped in the brain of that little girl. :-)

i was actually going through the adoption process with my son when i watched martian child for the first time. that one really left a mark, he was excellent in that one.
    i’m thinking i need to do a cusac-a-thon in the near future…

also, high fidelity all the way baby. thats the movie i used to convince my wife that movies with dialog were not all bad.
