It’s not that Marc’s a wimp. It’s just that, when it has always come to women, he’s always been a pushover and is so very easy to manipulate. On a side note… the house in that last panel? That’s my across-the-street neighbor’s house. I see it every day and night as I look out of my studio’s window (my “studio” is just a converted bedroom in our house.
OTHER NOTEWORTHY NEWS:
My Twitter Kang promotion illustration project got mentioned on Fleen this week.
That same promotion also got mentioned on The latest Gigcast (episode #177)
Convention schedule for 2009 (so far):
Take a look right there on my left sidebar and you’ll see my upcoming Con schedule. First one up is the one day Virginia Comic Con next month. Then it’s a Con in Roanoke Valley – near my college alma matta (Radford University – GO HIGHLANDERS!) and then it’s Heroes Con. Ignore the “Tentively Scheduled for:” part. I am definitely going. I just haven’t fully paid for my table yet but I am going!
And then there is the Pittsburgh Comicon in September. After that, it’s the Baltimore Comicon and (hopefully) this will be the year that I will attend SPX as a artist instead of just a wondering fan.
I’ll let everyone know of any more Con appearances as they pop up.
ANOTHER SUPER BIG ANNOUNCEMENT:
Yes, I am currently working on collecting the first 200 strips of Capes & babes in a book. I’m not taking pre-orders yet as I still have to organize and design the cover of the book but it’s already in the “pre-production” stages. Look here for more news on that!

Only very devout Rupert Holmes fans will understand the title of today’s strip. For those that say “Rupert Holmes… why does that name sound familiar?”… well you may recognize a little song called “Pina Colada Song”. On that album, there is a song called “Him”. Check it out on iTunes. It’s available there.
I have to blame my dad for my appreciation of Rupert Holmes though. In fact, I can also say that thanks to my dad’s musical tastes, I discovered an appreciation for The Little River Band and Neil Diamond. Back in the 70’s, my dad had albums of Rupert Holmes’ Pina Colada album, a bunch of Little River Band and, of course, Neil Diamond.
It’s kind of weird how, as kids, we always claim our parents are so uncool or un-hip but yet, we always seem to be influenced by THEIR musical tastes. For example, right now, my teenage daughter LOVES Billy Joel and KISS – two of my favorite artists or bands. So it’ll be interesting to see if those musical interests continue with her as Neil Diamond, The Little River Band and, yes, Rupert Holmes, have stuck with me throughout the years…
Anyway, here is today’s strip. Slowly working on something called a buffer too!

No, not the classic 80’s Tom Hank’s mermaid movie.
Today, I want to give a shout out to one of my favorite Podcasts – the Night Gig Gigcast. JT and Scott do a wonderfully consistent Podcast where they feature, plug and mention the heck out of a ton of other web comics out on the web – and we’re not just talking about the well known or ultra popular ones either.
Heck, they’ve already mentioned Capes & Babes on at least three podcasts so far – including their latest (Gigcast 177). Seriously guys, you’ve mentioned me so many times already, when are we gonna set up an interview?
Okay, that’s enough of the plugging. Seriously though, check them out on iTunes or on the link above and give their podcast a listen. I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

Hey everybody…
It’s been a little over a year since Capes & babes made its online debut so I thought that was time enough where I could finally start doing… oh, you know, some CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!
Hope you guys are enjoying learning a little bit about Marc’s past. Today’s strip only marks the beginning of why exactly Marc isn’t anxious to make a move on Joey even though it’s so obvious that when a girl like Joey hangs around you, she’s actually INTERESTED in you. But us guys… we can be real big clueless dorks sometimes.
NOW ON TO SOMETHING TOTALLY AWESOME AND COOL!!!
Will Miller does a strip called The 602 comic and he sent me some fan art of Marc, Joey and Roy in a kick ass Star Wars tribute. If you want to see a bigger version, click the image below.
On a complete side note, I TOTALLY dig how Will draws baseball hats. I just thought I’d mention that. Go check out his strip. In the mean time, enjoy this cool little piece of art!

I’m trying some new things in order to help try and spread the word about Capes & Babes and I’m offering something FREE for your help!
Do you Twitter or do you know someone that does?
Well, for every new Twitterer that adds me to their “follow list”, I will send them a full-color, marker rendering PDF of Kang the Time Lord. This is in the same style that I do all of my convention commissions in. It’s humorous and funny so if you like Kang, follow me on Twitter and I’ll e-mail you the PDF.
If you already follow me on Twitter…
You can still get the Kang PDF by adding a Capes & Babes link to your blog side bar under web comics that you like to read or some other similar type of link. Send me a link to your blog when you’ve added the Capes link and I’ll send you the Kang PDF.
If you follow me on Twitter, add a Capes & Babes link to your Blog side bar AND refer someone to Capes & Babes…
And THEY post a comment on my blog mentioning your referral, you’ll get another FREE, full-color PDF of A COMPLETELY NEW random super hero or villain and THEY’LL get the free Kang PDF. But they need to check out Capes & Babes and leave a comment on the blog so I’ll know they’ve visited the site and checked out the strip.
If that sounds good to you, then you know what to do. Help spread the word about Capes & Babes and get free art. Who else would offer you such a deal???

The two guys in the first two panels of today’s strip? That’s Pete and Frank from my friend, Joe Combs’ web strip, Business Casual.
Again, as when I needed a bartender at the beginning of this arch and threw in Danielle Corsetto’s comic strip version of James Hatton, I needed two barflys for today’s strip.
And since Pete and Frank are both in the IT/help desk/database programming world, I felt it would only be natuarl that the two of them would be alcoholic…. uh, I mean, hang out in a karaoke bar all the time. Hence, their appearance.
But seriously, go check out Joe’s strip and give it a chance.
Thanks for reading, everyone.

Having some more fun with the whole “Buffalo Fart” drink…
Also, this wasn’t posted at the time I uploaded a new strip and made this blog post but I recently submitted an article to Webcomics.com about Twitter and certain ways an artist can use Twitter as a self-promotional tool. Here’s an image of their home page. My article is on the left hand box.

Check it out. Especially if you use Twitter a lot.

There IS such a drink called a “Buffalo Fart” – I SWEAR THERE IS!
Back in circa 1992b.k. (before kids), one of my best friends, Dave, decided he was going into the Navy (no, the Billy Joel irony isn’t lost on me) so he invited me, my wife and our young kitten, Escher, down to Old Dominion University where he was going to school at the time. He wanted us to help him celebrate his pre-boot camp departure. As he said at the time, “the bar tab’s on me”. So really, who could resist an offer like that?
So we packed my little Suzuki Samurai Jeep and headed to Old Dominion. When you don’t have kids, you can do that sort of thing. And when we got there, we completely took advantage of his bar tab offer. Half way into his celebration (and after quite a few Long Island ice teas), he wanted me to try a “special drink” at the bar we were at – apparently, this was one of Dave’s favorite hang outs while he was attending Old Dominion University and also explains why he decided to join the Navy at the ripe old age of 26.
I didn’t exactly hear what Dave ordered over the loud music but by the time I got to the bar, he handed my a swirling brown glass that I swore had smoke coming out of it. “Drink this” he said, and we both raised our glasses and swallowed that evil, diabolical witches brew in one fell swoop.
When I was younger, I used to enjoy playing tackle football in the mud during rainy days. Occasionally, I’d fall head first in a huge mud puddle and would accidentally swallow some of that awful mud. I remember thinking, compared to what I just drank, that old, disgusting, disease-filled muddy water really wasn’t all that bad after all.
I just drank something so much worse.
“What the hell was that?” I coughed, gasped and wheezed toward Dave.
“That was a Buffalo Fart”, he said half joking, half mockingly since he knew I very rarely ever drank hard liquor. “Want another one?”
And we drank another one.
But ever since then, I’ve never been able to find any other bartender that has ever heard of a “Buffalo Fart” or anyone since who has ever heard of the drink. I just know, even despite all the alcohol that was already in my system before I drank it (twice) that night, it was STILL the most disgusting drink I have ever had.
Or ever will have.

Joey as a pin-up model
Philip Hofer (aka Frumph) has a new project called “Women of Webcomics” where various female characters in webcomics are featured along with a bio of the artist that draws that particular female character.
In today’s update, you can see my depiction of Joey as a pin-up model. Of course, even as a pin-up model, Joey couldn’t go very far without her gloves or some kind of tools. Here is Joey’s link if you want to check her out in full color:
And, because I couldn’t think of anything better to blog about last night…
The NFL Playoffs Blog
Boy, I’m so glad I’m not a professional gambler trying to make a living on the NFL, ’cause if I were, let’s see… I would have lost money on the Cardinals/Panthers game and today’s game up in New York. The only games I would have made any money on would have been the Titans/Ravens game and tonight’s San Diego/Pittsburgh game. Hmmm… on second thought, I also thought the Ravens would beat the Dolphins and the Cards would beat the Falcons out in Arizona so maybe I wouldn’t have lost the entire house.
But still, in this day and age, it’s just impossible to predict ANYTHING in the NFL any more. And these last two games are going to be pretty wild… Arizona seems to be a completely different team at home so I wonder if they’ll be able to do the the Eagles what they did to the Cowboys earlier in the year?
But really, does anyone doubt that the winner of the AFC game will be the favorite going into the Superbowl? For whatever reason, the Ravens/Steelers game seems feel a little like the old 49ers / Cowboys Championship games felt in the mid 90’s. That should be a wild game. Steelers will probably be favorites since they’ll be at home but it should be one heck of a defensive game. I wonder if any body will score any points?
