Fresh Prince of America…
Just my own little take on how I think the “Will Smith as Captain America” movie would play out.
What? You don’t think Alfonso would be a great singing Falcon??? C’mon! That would be GREAT! Heck, it would be a heck of a lot better then the train wreck known as “Wild. Wild West”.
But then again, ANYTHING would be better then that movie.

don’t tell me these kind of rumors. i’m not sure if my heart can take it. that, and i had to spend the next 30 minutes looking up all of the casting rumors on the internet.

Hahaha! Well, the Alfonso casting would be ENTIRELY fictional Joe, but heard/read/listened to a couple of different internet podcasts and web sites about the supposed casting call for Will Smith as Captain America - and that’s how this strip came to be.
Personally, I always thought Howie Long would make a great captain America. I thought that way before and after I saw “Broken Arrow” a couple of years ago. I still think he’d make a great one. Now, would he be willing to take time out of his Fox Football gig to make the movie? That’s the question (at least for me anyway).

You never know for sure. After seeing the first Batman film, I thought casting Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman was actually quite a good choice. Casting Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man was genius. (Actually, all the casting in Iron Man was perfect.) It might just work.
That said, it is a bit hard to get my mind wrapped around Will Smith as Captain America. It doesn’t have a thing to do with his skin tone. It’s just that Cap has always been way on the serious side where Will always seems to bring a bit of irreverence to his roles. (Though Smith’s Robert Neville (I Am Legend) was nearly quipless.)
Anyhow, thanks for treating this casting possibility with all the seriousness it deserves.

Hey Qoheleth…
Thanks for taking the time and adding a comment about the strip.
I couldn’t agree with you more about Michael Keaton and the first Batman movie. I didn’t have any reservations about that since a few months before, I watched “Clean and Sober” with him in it. It’s an old movie but if you like Keaton, you should find it and rent it. You’ll like it.
Also, make no mistake. I really am a big fan of Will Smith. I enjoyed Legend too (except that I didn’t see the need to CGI all the zombie vampire things) and my wife and I also very much enjoyed “I, Robot” too.
Like you, it doesn’t have anything to with skin tone for me either since I think Sam Jackson would be an awesome Nick Fury in a full-length movie and Michael Clarke Duncan was a pretty awesome choice as Wilson Fisk.
But for me, Captain America will always be Steve Rogers… a white, skinny kid who took a Government sponsored, experimental steroid and became a super hero.
This is also another reason why I haven’t picked up any Captain America-related books since his “death” either. A lot of people can wear the red, white and blue, but Cap will only be Steve Rogers to me.

i never thought bucky as cap would work either, but it is. it’s a great book right now, and it’s as consistently good as it’s ever been in the close to 20 years i’ve been reading cap. brubaker has made cap’s entire cast as interesting as batman’s or superman’s. falcon, shield, sharon carter, red skull and the baddies all have had time to shine.
wow…and has it actually been 20 years since pre-teen joe picked up those first captain americas? man, i’m getting old.
and howie long could have worked, but he’s way too old now. there’s really no actor that i can even picture in the role of cap. probably best to get an unknown.
