Intervention…

The tale of ROM’s descent into pop culture obscurity and the aftermath of the descent - in the form of “Behind the Newsprint” continues…

And for those that might not recognize all the other mechanical beings in the last panel, from left to right, here’s the roll call:

IG-88 - one of the bounty hunters that was hired by the Empire to hunt down Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back. I’m sure there’s probably been plenty of novels that might have mentioned IG-88 but in the movies, you never saw him again after Empire.

A Go-Bot. Does it REALLY matter who or which Go-Bot it is? Aren’t they pretty much all the same? Which would explain even more why THIS particular Go-Bot has an addiction problem, doesn’t it?

Cylon 12. I would think ALL the classic Cylons would have some kind of addiction problem once they were told they were no longer welcomed in the “new and improved” world of Battlestar Gallactica…

And, lastly, Ultron Number whatever.

Of course it matters! It’s freakin’ Cy-Kill!!! =)

Allow me to unveil my geekiness for all things obscure and say I’m not sure what a ycentar or centar is supposed to be, however, a Yahren was the year and centons were roughly minutes. I’m sure no one else gives a frak, but I’ve been watching this felgercarb online for a couple sectars now and it works its way into your head if you not careful.

    Hey John and Tovias…
Thanks for taking the time to add a comment to today’s strip. All of the Battlestar Galactica time references were based on this web site I found last night:
    http://www.sf-worlds.com/galactica/time-chronology.html

But the truth is, I didn’t read much more then the first two paragraphs (that’s a lot of reading!) and based a lot of it also on what I remember from the OLD 70’s show too. :-)

Now, what I’m really disappointed about is that only one person so far has pointed out the error in IG-88’s dialog since a “parsec” is supposed to be a distance in space. But since I also couldn’t find any time references in Star Wars, the only thing I could remember was how fast the Falcon was.

But I chalk that one up to evidence of how badly all that STP Fuel Injection Cleaner has destroyed IG-88’s memory chips. ;-)

When I saw IG-88’s ‘parsec’ comment I at first thought “distance not time” and almost immediately corrected myself with “but the Falcon made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs…” and I remembered the years of internet geek wars about if Lucas made a mistake or if the Kessel Run was this 18 parsec route that Solo made a short cut through.

I honestly wouldn’t have picked up on the centar/centon difference if not for having watched BSG reruns from 1978 on Hulu all weekend.

Tovias… I believe you and I are in the age group aren’t we? I only say that because one of the things I remember when I was younger, was having “endless” discussions with my friends about what all the different mentions of time REALLY were in Battlestar Galactica. The FIRST Battlestar Gallactica, anyway.

Remember when you were that age and could argue about silly stuff like that all day long? Oh wait. That really hasn’t changed all that much now, has it? Only instead of cheesy sci-fi TV shows, we now argue about fantasy football and sports.

    LOL!

    :-)
