Why I’ll never be an editorial cartoonist…

I thought long and hard about whether or not to put this cartoon up today.

Many of you might think that the figure in the foreground of this comic is supposed to be Gary Gygaz but it’s really not supposed to be him - specifically (although the idea for the strip did come to me as soon as I heard about his death). I just thought that the idea of a gamer - upon death - having to roll his or her 20 sided dice to decide what might happen to their eternal soul was wacky and off the wall.

But I also knew that - potentially - it could be viewed as being disrespectful to Mr. Gygaz. The fact is, I didn’t - and never did - know who My. Gygaz was. I never played D&D (although I DID draw a bunch of D&D characters for all of my friends). The closest I ever got to playing D&D was Villains and Vigilantes but even then, I was more into the art and drawing everyone’s characters then I was the game.

But even then, I had never heard of the name Gary Gygaz before - not even in the many comic book circles I used to run with. I really never heard of Mr. Gygaz’s name until last week - and maybe it’s because of that disconnect that I had such a morbid little sense of humor about what might happen to an RPGer when they die.

Again, this is not meaning to be disrespectful to Mr. Gygaz. And my condolences to the entire D&D world that misses him.

Listening to… Bonnie Tyler’s “Faster then the speed of night” album.

It’s Gygax, with an x, you fool :)

Not disrepectful at all. RPG webcomics did plenty worse.

“Gygaz”???? Man, what the hell was I smoking that day???
Okay, it wasn;t a misspelling as much as it was the fact that my big, fat fingers hit the “z” button instead of the “x” button on my keyboard.

    Yeah… I’ll go with that.

Only, I did it more then once, didn’t I???

    Oh, brother…

    :-/

    Sorry about that Mr. Gygax.
