Marvel Universe travelling advice…
March 31st, 2008 | by ChrisReally, there should be some kind of travel agency that’s willing to publish these kinds of guidelines, dontcha think?
Had kind of a tough weekend though… Seems like a lot of the people I follow on Twitter have recently caught some kind of bug and Twittered about it. That must have triggered something in me ’cause I came down with something late Friday afternoon. Was in bed for most of the weekend – and when I wasn’t in bed, I just basically felt like sitting around and doing nothing. But fortunately, I already had this week’s strips drawn and inked (but not yet digitally finished). AND I was able to finish reading KISS: Unmasked, a book my wife and daughter got for me for my birthday.
I also watched two really old movies – The Gods Must Be Crazy and The ‘Net, with Sandra Bullock (Hubba! Hubba!). The Gods Must Be Crazy still holds up in its unusual and quirky way (even though it was a 1980 film). The Net? No, that one doesn’t hold up very well at all. But it was still enjoyable to watch in a nostalgic, Wargames kind of way.
It was actually enjoyable to watch all the old Mac system 7 graphics being used throughout the movie. And it’s really funny to watch an entire security system be destroyed by a 3.5 floppy disc!
Anyway, enjoy today’s strips you Gambit and X-men fans!

My daughter absolutely LOOOOOVES Naruto. In fact, we went to go see the Naruto movie – the “one day special engagement” – that came out at the end of last summer or early fall (I can’t remember). At the time, I didn’t know ANYTHING about Naruto and so, on the way to the theater, I kept asking her what the character’s name was. My daughter – as a proud Naruto fan she is – explained time and time again that his name was “NAR-O-TO” but all I kept hearing was “Naw Yer Big Fat Toe”. Hence the title of today’s strip.

I REALLY DO have high hopes for it…
March 25th, 2008 | by ChrisYou have to understand… like Roy, I have a very big emotional investment in Speed Racer. He was my childhood hero. So, almost more then any other movie this summer, the one I was to do the best – or, at least, exceed expectations – is Speed Racer.
Now, I’m not one that normally judges movies based on a 2 minute trailer but the first time I saw the Speed trailer on Apple’s web site, I got a little worried as I saw all those bright, flashy colors and immediately though “Oh God, it’s Dick Tracy” all over again. But recently, I went to go see College Road Trip with my daughter and they showed the Speed Racer trailer . On the big screen, it looks the same but different. I know that sounds odd but all the flashy colors are there but the trailer actually looked a lot better on the big screen then it did on my computer screen.
So… I still have big hopes.

Still experimenting with hand lettering…
[EDIT]
I decided to ditch the hand-lettering. The graphic designer in me just didn’t like it. I re-did the strip using Blambot’s Anime Ace 2 font – which I’ve always liked. I’ll post the original, hand-lettered Capes N Babes Saint Patrick’s day strip over at my art blog.
Is it just me or are ATM fees just going through the roof? Sigh… of course it’s not just me. EVERYTHING is going through the roof these days.
Anyway, I’m just about ready to start applying lipstick whenever I visit the local ATM machine – just like Roy has decided to do.
Also, it’s official. Today is my birthday. So, if I was in Logan’s Run, I will have been “officially” running for 11 years now. And, if I was a writer in Hollywood, I could “officially” meet the requirements to write scripts for that fictional TV show “Fortysomething” (even though I qualified for that LAST year…).
Just spent the evening watching the first two episodes of “John Adams” on HBO this evening. It looks fantastic. But I’m also a Revolutionary War buff… that was always my favorite part of history… reading about the 1700’s in America. The mini-series looks fantastic. Can’t wait to watch more episodes…

Those damn Sonic Burger commercials…
March 19th, 2008 | by ChrisHere’s the deal… when I lived in Nevada – or when I vist my in-laws in North Carolina, there ARE Sonic Burger joints in both of those places. But here in Northern Virginia? Nope. Not a one.
So tell me… why do they insist on teasing me so by playing Sonic Burger commercial after Sonic Burger commercial every night?
I’m with Roy on this one. It seems to me that Sonic Burger could probably spend their money better by advertising in an area… THAT ACTUALLY HAS A SONIC BURGER!
Ugh.

Today’s (the 17th) my daughter’s birthday…
March 16th, 2008 | by ChrisYes I know that title of this blog entry doesn’t have anything to do with the strip but what the hey… my daughter’s thirteen today – yes, on Saint Patrick’s Day. Three more years and I’ll have to deal with the whole sweet sixteen thing. But for now, I’ll just sit back and enjoy her being thirteen. I hope her thirteenth year was better then mine…
I had a miserable 13th year… mainly because I had to quit playing baseball that year. The little place in the Nevada desert where I lived at the time only had Little League up to 12 years old so when I turned 13, I had to quit playing. At least until we moved to Florida half a year later. But by then, it was too late. It took me several years to “catch up” to everyone else. And, maybe… in some ways, I’m STILL trying desperately to “catch up” by playing in all the men’s rec baseball leagues that I do.
But anyway, today is HER day. Not mine so I wish her a very merry birthday celebration. Happy Birthday Dani!
Now, on a side note, today’s the first hand lettered strip I’ve ever published. I will keep trying this to see if I can’t make the lettering a bit better but for now, what do you all think? Was this a good first attempt? Is the lettering so awful, you can’t read the strip? Or, does the hand lettering bring a more “personal touch” to the strip? Curious creator of the strip wants to know…

The Marvel Character Relocation Plan…
March 14th, 2008 | by ChrisEveryone knows a Marvel character never stays dead for very long – well, at least not unless that character’s name is “Uncle Ben”. But anyway, do you ever wonder what that character does while waiting for Marvel to bring him or her back from the dead? Well, it turns out Marvel has something similar to the Witness Protection Plan where they set up a recently killed character with a new job, a new life and a new identity in order for that character to make ends meet until Marvel deems them worthy of a return in print form.
What? You mean you didn’t know this???
Well… now you do.

Just having a little fun at Mr. Blackbolt’s expense.
Personally, I think this is my best one yet…. but I’ll let others decide if that’s truly the case or not.

Why I’ll never be an editorial cartoonist…
March 10th, 2008 | by ChrisI thought long and hard about whether or not to put this cartoon up today.
Many of you might think that the figure in the foreground of this comic is supposed to be Gary Gygaz but it’s really not supposed to be him – specifically (although the idea for the strip did come to me as soon as I heard about his death). I just thought that the idea of a gamer – upon death – having to roll his or her 20 sided dice to decide what might happen to their eternal soul was wacky and off the wall.
But I also knew that – potentially – it could be viewed as being disrespectful to Mr. Gygaz. The fact is, I didn’t – and never did – know who My. Gygaz was. I never played D&D (although I DID draw a bunch of D&D characters for all of my friends). The closest I ever got to playing D&D was Villains and Vigilantes but even then, I was more into the art and drawing everyone’s characters then I was the game.
But even then, I had never heard of the name Gary Gygaz before – not even in the many comic book circles I used to run with. I really never heard of Mr. Gygaz’s name until last week – and maybe it’s because of that disconnect that I had such a morbid little sense of humor about what might happen to an RPGer when they die.
Again, this is not meaning to be disrespectful to Mr. Gygaz. And my condolences to the entire D&D world that misses him.
Listening to… Bonnie Tyler’s “Faster then the speed of night” album.
